"Takin' Turns" is a twice-monthly music circle showcasing some of the best singer-songwriters and musicians in Vancouver and beyond. The event happens every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at The Tipper Restaurant on Kingsway. All participating artists take the stage together and take turns to share their music, influences, inspirations, and insights in an informal yet respectful environment. "Maestros on Main" is dead; long live "Takin' Turns." Actually, the only thing that's changed about this bi-monthly music circle is the name and the venue. The Tipper Restaurant on Kingsway has a separate room at the back called The Review Room, and it's perfect for this event. First, there's a good-sized stage with space to spare for at least five musicians (the last show at Cafe Montmartre was a bit cramped). Second, The Review Room is separate from (but connected to) the main restaurant area and so offers an intimate listening environment. Third, the food is good and reasonably priced, and the beer's always on special.

In addition to all of this, I sense that the owner is willing to help a unique, reoccurring music event such as this get off the ground. I first met Colin when I inquired about holding my CD launch party there; I got a good vibe from him and his restaurant, and the party was a huge success.

Sunday 8th January will be the first "Takin' Turns" music circle at The Tipper starting at 8 o'clock and featuring Rob Fillo, Emad Armoush, and Taylor Harp. Don't miss it!

I am hesitant to announce how much i love this place because I know it's a local hole in the wall that likes to keep an intimate customer base. I really appreciate the extra mile this team goes through to make sure you're not only having a great meal, but also enjoying wonderful service.

To the food - Awesome! I really didn't expect quality like this across from McD's but that's what a great find is, right?

I will be back over and over, until the owners change or I become GLUTEN intolerant - oh wait, they have a delicious GLUTEN-Free menu as well.

A well rounded restaurant. Great neighborhood place.
Always has a local beer on special and the burgers (beef, buffalo, veggie, portobello or chicken) are always satisfying. Have yet to try breakfast but their burgers, sandwiches, and lunch in general are noteworthy. Prices are reasonable as well!

The Tipper gets better and better each time I visit.

The owner actually read my last review and decided to call me. Last time I was there, I complained about food coming out too slowly, the back room being too cold, and heaters as well as the TV not working. Well, he told me all those things were addressed and invited me back. That was HUGE for me. First of all, he fixed all the negative things I had mentioned in my review and second of all, he actually called me. I really appreciate businesses that care about what their customers thought. When I met him in person, he was sincere and a down to earth person. What a great guy!

The food was delicious. My husband and I ordered the Naughty and Nice Poutine. What an adorable name! The "Naughty" was the poutine, which the gravy was made from vegetables and was flavorful without being too salty. (I hate poutine that is too salty.) They use cheddar cheese in their poutine as well, which I liked. The "Nice" was the salad and was fabulous. They make their own dressing and you can taste the freshness in both dressing and crisp vegetables. Surprisingly, my husband actually ate most of the salad and he's not a big salad person. We also had the BLT sandwich with a side of seafood chowder. The BLT was on sourdough bread and had a nice smokey taste. My husband and I gobbled up the sandwich and enjoyed every bite, we didn't even leave the crust. The seafood chowder was thick and full of seafood. It was my favorite thing out of all our dishes and full of quality ingredients. They don't use fillers since I don't recall getting any potato in my chowder.

What a difference from my previous visits! I am truly glad I had a chance to eat here again and will definitley be back again and again!

Re-visited Tipper Restaurant for my husband's birthday.

I requested the back room since there were about 15 of us and well... I wish it impressed me more. The back room was dark and didn't have much ambience. It was cold and when we tried to plug in the portable heater, the fuse blew. They told me the TV would be on so we can watch the game, but when we arrived was then told, it didn't work. My husband's order came 20mins after the first entree served. So it was his birthday and he got his dish last and very late...

The reason that I give this place a 3/5 is because their food wasn't bad and the service was good. The manager and waitress were friendly and tried to be helpful. I wish we had a little more attention because they left us alone in the back a little too much. Despite these set-backs, everyone still had a good time including my husband. I enjoyed my buffalo burger and my husband loved his chicken burger. This restaurant can be much more and it will really depend on my mood if I want to come back since my husband likes this place more than I do.

I never really noticed this place before until a few days ago and decided to try it out. It's on Kingsway and the cross-street is Victoria Drive.

This place looks a little out of place beside all the Asian restaurants. It has a cool / dark look and casual style. The service was really good and the waitress came back 3 times to see if we needed anything, but didn't hover. Quick and efficient service.

We both had burgers, which were tasty and beers. It was good, but nothing to write home about. If I were in the area and felt like something casual I'd eat there again.

Awesome place with great food. Everything is fresh, and they make their own Ranch and salad dressing. I have been here a few times and I have not ordered anything that was not delicous. Worth checking out for sure.

The Tipper is a good restaurant if you want laid back and good quality fresh food. Burgers are top notch and the salads are great. Portion size is perfect. The atmosphere is funky, they've hung local artists paintings throughout the restaurant. Service was friendly and quick.

Our next visit will be for brunch, hope it's as good as dinner!

Grade: A+

I have eaten at The Tipper several times and the food, quality, cost, and service continues to blow me away each time I eat there. The menu is diverse, the ingredients are fresh and are bought locally, and the vegetarian owner is hands on and also concerned with the ethics of eating.

I don’t eat out often, but when I do, The Tipper often comes to mind. I really don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order off the menu.

In my opinion, the ambiance is like jazz bar meets local art gallery meets urban dining rolled into one. You have to see it to get exactly what I mean. And the irony that The Tipper is directly across the street from a MacDonald’s cannot be missed.

One thing that is unique about this restaurant is a back room which can be rented out at reasonable rates for a variety of functions.

More vegan options!

Don't know much about vegan food? It's not all soy. It's not all raw. It's not boring. Some vegans, just as with some non-vegans, are stupid and think you have to put tofu in everything to make it vegan. This is not true in the least. Ignore recipes that are titled things like "tofu cupcakes". There is no reason in hell or on earth why anyone should ever put tofu in a cupcake. You can make perfectly good cakes, pies, burgers, pastas, sandwiches, burritos, anything!, that are perfectly vegan without any soy products at all. FYI. We're not talking "fake food" here. We're talking real food.

Please. Seriously. Check out these cookbooks and you'll see some examples of awesome food you could be serving that customers such as ourselves would be more inclined to enjoy:

Our go-to brunch place has now got all the things I require to be completely satisfied.

BENNY's!!!!

Available on the weekends only - a selection of 5 or 6 different types from the traditional, a feta and herbs benny, a samble scramble benny(not poached eggs) and a TAB benny (tomato, avocado and pepper bacon)

Honey went for the samble scramble (not a surprise) and I went for the TAB (tomato, avocado and pepper bacon - not a surprise choice for me either). There was a while a few years ago that I'd overdosed on avocado and had a bad reaction to it everytime I ate it. Thankfully that is no longer the case as I'd have been in big trouble - avocado-A-plenty on this lovely brunch munch. Generous with everything - very nice sauce and the usual home taters on the side.

Add coffee and my love as company and things are good.

Has become a bit of a hipster haven - but as my wise daughter points out: saying we liked something before it was cool makes US the ultimate hipsters....who knew? Time to resurect my buddy holly glasses and cardigans.

I just recently moved to the neighborhood and decided to give the Tipper a try. After searching unsuccessfully for a comfortable neighborhood pub/restaurant in our old location, we were used to being disappointed when trying new places. Not so with the Tipper! :)

I've only been in the neighborhood for a week and already I'm a regular - we've been three times already! Now, that's mostly due to an unpacked kitchen, but hey... it's nice to have someplace like the Tipper to go in such a scenario!

We've tried the chicken burger w/ caesar salad, breakfast burrito, tomato avocado and bacon benny and the penne w/ tomato and basil. Every dish delivered exactly what it advertised - good flavors with a feeling of home cooking. I've been satisfied every time!

All of their breakfasts come with hand cut potatoes and every table has an array of hot sauces - as a hot sauce connoisseur this gets them serious bonus points in my book! I have a feeling we'll be dropping by for weekend brunch fairly often. :)

The service there is great too - every server I've had has been friendly and attentive. I highly recommend the Tipper to anyone in the neighborhood looking for a great place to grab a pint ($4 for a regular, $5 for a giant one!) or a satisfying laid back meal.

My friend and I stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner. I ordered the chicken strips with a side of house salad, and my friend ordered a pound of wings and the house salad as well. We also shared the soup of the day, which was red curry with rice. The food came out super fast, and it was all really good. The chicken strips weren't dry, the wings were super tasty, and my friend loved her salad.

It's a really comfortable, laid back diner-style restaurant-slash-bar, which appeals to all age groups, from us young folks to seniors alike. We'd definitely like to come back to try more items from the menu.

Menu: large breakfast menu (although no eggs benedict), served till 5 pm. Appies, burgers and sandwiches, pasta, and more.
Price: Appetizers and burgers are reasonably priced (starting at around $8); main courses are $14-20-ish?
Service: our server was super friendly and helpful.
Ambiance: unpretentious, no-frills diner.

Thanks for the note and the chance to clear this up for you and others.

The Tipper does not handle the door for ANY shows or events. 100 % has always gone to the artists or organizers. This includes plays, art shows, live music, hanging art sales, board game clubs, AA meetings, fundraisers, etc ...

In regards to Monday night's Live Music Review. This is a night where artists new & seasoned can try out new songs, get some chops, stage time, get to know the room and see if they would like to host their own night. A cover is usually charged, however Artists don't pay to play, and get plus one guest admission complimentary. The small amount that is collected is for the organizers time to keep the night structured, & equipment etc. Live Music Review has only taken a night or two off in over Two Years perhaps lending its self to the impression that the Tipper is hosting the night.

LMR might (should) state in e-mails and ads that it is an unpaid event.

Once again, if an artist thinks they are a fit for the room and would like to host a show here receiving 100% of their cover - pls contact us.

Hello everyone, hope this finds you well and at peace with everything! Much thanks to everyone who made it out to our show last saturday at the Cafe Montmartre; my bandmates and I all felt it was a marvelous evening of music, good eats & drinks, and overall good vibes. Our successes are deeply rooted in the positive presence of others, and we cannot be more grateful for all the support we have continuously received from friends,... family, and future friends we have yet to have the pleasure of meeting.

Once again, my bandmates and I are hosting a concert, this time at a really fantastic lounge space at a restaurant called "the Bottle Tipper", also fondly known simply as "the Tipper". Since its inception, the Tipper Review Room has embraced the full scope of local art, ranging from the visual arts to diverse comedy and musical acts. In addition to supporting Vancouver's arts and culture community, the Tipper has also maintained a mandate of serving deliciously fresh food, to which I can personally attest! The Tipper has definitely turned into a good place to go in the Eastside.
Though Victoria/Kingsway is blessed with a lot of Vietnamese/South Asian/Chinese fare, it's often tough to find good burgers, good breakfasts, and that relaxed, neighbourhood ambience that makes you want to stay.

That happened the other day: we were sauntering down Victoria when a monsoon hit and we ran for cover. And what a port in the storm! Good coffee, excellent cheesecakes, and the feeling we'd walked into an sitcom "Friends/Seinfeld" episode.

Later in the week, a friend whose food advice is trusted suggested it as THE new place to meet for dinner. He was right, and I was so familiar with it, I hadn't even thought to make the suggestion.

The Bottle Tipper.
Fairly average all around. Menu - average. Service - average. Decor - average.
We eat here on a semi regular basis, having a like/like relationship with the place. We've never had an awful experience here, otherwise we'd not return. Staff is friendly. Last time we visited the owner remarked on my sketching. I have a habit of sketching on napkins while drinking my coffee. Often I leave them on the table, wondering if the waitstaff recognizes themselves in my doodles....It made me feel special and almost famous somehow. Nice personal touch but the menu needs something.... breakfast could benefit nicely by the addition of an eggs benedict.

Fantastic spot!

This slightly out-of-the-way restaurant on a busy boulevard offers a simple but delicious menu of fresh food. The Tipper salad is outstanding, the pasta dishes are made with fresh ingredients and outstanding, the roast beef sandwich melts in your mouth and the seafood chowder is highly recommended. I was trapped in the hotel across the street during the recent Olympics (was covering as a journalist) and ate at The Tipper for 20 straight (very late) nights. Rare are my trips to Vancouver..rarer still is my need to search for a site to rave about somewhere that became one of the highlights of a recent trip but here goes... As unassuming as it is inviting this place is a must visit for those who like the informal dining and drinks experience but what made me return again and again is the polite, warm and efficient customer service displayed by all the staff..each and every one a credit to the proprietor Colin Shandler! Monday night is a blast and well worth the look..and provides a fantastic outlet for talented musicians to show Vancouver what they are made of! A unique idea thats sure to catch on..from local art to event rooms showcasing talent to fabulous food served by wonderful people I suggest you get to Tipper pretty fast and not miss out on a truely unique experience..alas I live in Dublin, Ireland so my visits maybe few but if your in the area pop in tell them the Irish girl sent ya! Im sure you'll thank me ;-)

I'm admittedly a bit of a fish out of water. I came up to Vancouver from San Francisco to take a tour of UBC, and on my very tight budget, opted for the Day's Inn Metro. Across the street, I stumbled across The Tipper almost completely by accident, and I'm incredibly glad that I did.

I've come to The Tipper now for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I think it's safe to say that this is the best that it gets. The staff is incredibly sweet and friendly, the atmosphere is wonderfully cozy and inviting, and the food is just fantastic. Hands down the best omelet I've ever had, and that's saying quite a bit! The food is very reasonably priced, and the soothing overhead music is nicely complimented by some very cool paintings on the wall, creating a very welcoming atmosphere.

From the fantastic food to the wonderfully kind staff, The Tipper is very easily a five out of five stars, and the reason I signed up for a Yelp account!

You are right, and it's Agreed this isn't a flashy restaurant website - quite possibly the worst website ever! This blog is more for updating events for those who check us out.

The Tipper concept is simple, it isn't about the flash, or being fancy - just fresh... in a 50 + year old location.

We choose to prepare everything in house such as our sauces & dressings, hand cut breakfast potatoes & fries, as well as produce & proteins, the informational blog too. We are a small community driven diner that focuses 98% of its time on the quality products we serve to happy people, with a return to "slow food". No celebrity chefs here. Although a Tipper Restaurant website is being built, this blog is more for the events side of things showcasing a few of the artists & singer songwriters who have enjoyed our review room.

The Tipper's menu will change every few months to reflect the best of the season. Look for it! in the near future we will have links to the menu. Until then please send us a e-mail or call and we will fax it or e-mail it to you.
